<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">One of the biggest new trends in nursery and crib bedding design is the addition of crib rail covers. These covers, while providing color and design to your nursery, also provide a very functional and safe environment for your little bundle of joy.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">While most trends move with color and design leading the way, this particular change has been brought about by need. Teething babies need to chew! By protecting the rail of your crib from sharp teeth, your crib and child will thank you.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">There are a few different styles of rail covers you can choose. One of the most popular right now is the <a href="http://www.rockytopdesign.com/shop/BeddingRail-Covers-and-Teething-Guards/p/Scalloped-Teething-Crib-Rail-Cover-Long-Side-x10095894.htm" target="_blank">scalloped rail cover</a>...and you can see why! Its statement is one your friends won't soon forget. This combination of coral, mint and gray is sure to be a winner in any household.</span><br />

I used to debate the sappy holiday on live radio in college. I've seen anger in friends' eyes when talking about the ridiculousness of the day and how it was just another day created by a company.</span><br />
<div>
<span id="goog_467241507"></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJUZWZUZwhis7n3BX5S7HfOShPN3hpFY4zvM1mDyDWd7lMIFoVeVRoTxnVC27onq980YvuWVPeY8ktmrprLbyYqUgqrkgDp903Age-uX55RfTnuYi6EmvqvK_-ggfcZg6uVsUS3-Lpaipl/s1600/FullSizeRender.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJUZWZUZwhis7n3BX5S7HfOShPN3hpFY4zvM1mDyDWd7lMIFoVeVRoTxnVC27onq980YvuWVPeY8ktmrprLbyYqUgqrkgDp903Age-uX55RfTnuYi6EmvqvK_-ggfcZg6uVsUS3-Lpaipl/s400/FullSizeRender.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">You're wrong. And here's why. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">We all need love, and who says this day has to be the center of attention for couples in love. Can't this be about the love that we should all be showing each other every day? Can this be a day that we try just a bit harder than the day before and day after, with a smile, make someone's day brighter? Yes, yes it can.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">There is such a focus on couples on Valentine's Day, but it doesn't have to be that way. What if...<i>what if,</i> we went around and helped people love themselves better for that day. Give them a glow, a confidence that someone genuinely "loves me". No romance, just friendly, I value you, love.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">So, this Valentine's Day, put down the hate, put down the self-pity (I have it, too) and instead focus on a day to love a little bit better. Gender, age...it doesn't matter. Hug someone. Write a note. Spread the love.</span></div>
</div>

It's December 17th and I need quick ideas for teacher gifts. I enter my sewing room with open eyes. I see scrap fabric and <a href="https://warmcompany.com/products/warm-home/insul-bright" target="_blank">insult-bright</a>.<br />
<br />
Bam. Hot Pads for the kitchen!<br />
<br />
These are so easy to make that it's almost cheating. You'll need:<br />
<ul>
<li>Half Yard of Insult-Bright, which is a heat reflective batting. Ask for it at the cut counter. It's by the interfacing, etc.</li>
<li>Scrap Fabrics. Enough for both sides of the hot pad and binding.</li>
</ul>
<div>
Because I made homemade <a href="http://designwithaltitude.blogspot.com/2015/05/teacher-gifts-vanilla-extract-and.html" target="_blank">vanilla extract</a> last May, I was able to package them together! However, if you don't have happy accidents like that, you can package with your favorite store-bought cookies, etc. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To assemble the hot pad/pot holder:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm using 2 cuts of pretty fabric and 2 cuts of insul-bright. Measurements are up to you. I double layer the batting for more protection. I don't think you have to do this. There is no top or bottom to this batting.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Much like a quilt, layer the fabrics in this order: </div>
<div>
<ol>
<li>Pretty fabric right side down</li>
<li>both layers of insult-bright</li>
<li>pretty fabric right side up</li>
<li>Pin in a couple of places to secure while you sew. Yes, you have to do this.</li>
</ol>
<div>
This is where I quilt the layers together. I didn't use a free-motion quilting foot here and kept the feed-dogs up....from what I can remember. I just sewed it all together in whatever pattern my pretty little, creative mind wanted to. After getting it nice and quilted, trim it up in a nice square. Add binding. I'm not adding instructions for binding, but if you need one, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vCWpxBRs20" target="_blank">this one</a> is the best! </div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOmPAW2w-lHAd0oIvaNHSlS6lmiDPd3F1izUq08-3i4VczzzUIBF6UBammFLxLK15lwyBAWUUdGLzYkVXraLkUUd56HL5Nc-6_12ZjrW_S9ieo_j-JmYje7Vf4xr-WTXYpHwu2oeCpsqBf/s1600/vanilla+and+potholder+collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOmPAW2w-lHAd0oIvaNHSlS6lmiDPd3F1izUq08-3i4VczzzUIBF6UBammFLxLK15lwyBAWUUdGLzYkVXraLkUUd56HL5Nc-6_12ZjrW_S9ieo_j-JmYje7Vf4xr-WTXYpHwu2oeCpsqBf/s640/vanilla+and+potholder+collage.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Press and you're done. Perhaps teachers can't use more hot pads, but perhaps they can. I love handmade teacher gifts and I think (I hope) they do, too. After all, they're protecting, teaching and loving my kids all year long. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Happy creating!</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
It's that time of year again...teacher gifts. I wanted to share what I made last year....or was it the year before? Anyway, this is a classic gift that is handmade. An important note....the vanilla extract needs a couple of months at least to cure. So, if you made the extract now, it would be perfect for Christmas.<br />
<br />
Things you'll need for the extract and sugar:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Vanilla Beans, 40-50 ct. (more about those later)</li>
<li>Vodka or Rum. Needs to be 70-80 proof or more.</li>
<li>Sugar (organic, Turbinado, or plain white granulated sugar will do)</li>
<li>Pretty jars for the finished project</li>
<li>Knife, cutting board and food processor</li>
</ul>
<div>
More about the ingredients:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<u>Vanilla Beans</u>: I usually buy my vanilla beans local, but you can order on Ebay, Amazon, etc. To make a whole bottle of vanilla extract (we're talking a 1.75L of alcohol), you're going to want about 20 beans or more. If you're gifting small bottles of extract, you're going to want some extra vanilla beans to put in the individual bottles. You can order those later. The sugar takes about 20 beans as well. To store vanilla beans, wrap them very, very well in plastic to prevent drying. Store in a dark, cool space.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<u>Liquor</u>: I usually use vodka, but my bestie uses dark rum and had great results. Just make sure that you are hitting that 70+ proof goal. I do this with a 1.75L size, but I should have purchased more because it didn't leave any extract for me!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<u>Sugar</u>: Purchase enough sugar to fill your containers. Any kind of granulated sugar will do. Turbinado sugar is especially delicious:) Check your local co-op for specialty sugars.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<u>Jars</u>: I have had great luck at World Market for jars. They seem to have every shape and size that I need and they aren't expensive. I'm sure if you look around at your favorite store.....you can find something that will work. Heck, even canning jars for the sugar would be pretty. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoUOT1hCb8tQpP78bkh3UuduNSa-r_uNq3sYy8-a6U5_4ENZfh4jZnZy0uquIyn6nd62le2LCe1R5HtOdUYxBamivC3jwa112R2XnhoLfD4CIbe4XGSQp70Mm24wCZOLPwIHoANLkt2VAd/s1600/IMG_2811_Fotor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoUOT1hCb8tQpP78bkh3UuduNSa-r_uNq3sYy8-a6U5_4ENZfh4jZnZy0uquIyn6nd62le2LCe1R5HtOdUYxBamivC3jwa112R2XnhoLfD4CIbe4XGSQp70Mm24wCZOLPwIHoANLkt2VAd/s400/IMG_2811_Fotor.jpg" width="266" /></a><br />
<div>
Instructions: Wash your hands and clean your work space.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<u><b>For Extract</b></u>: Get out your vanilla beans and your liquor. All you have to do is cut the vanilla bean lengthwise from one end to the other. I then poke around in there a bit to make sure it's split open nicely. Add it to your liquor. The whole bean goes in. Repeat with all beans. Done. All you have to do is close up the liquor, put in your pantry and give it a shake about once a week. Ideally, the liquor and vanilla mixture should sit for about 5 months before gifting/using.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To package prettily: So, it's been 5 months or more and you're ready to give this gift that is now vanilla extract. Fill your gift bottles and get out your stash vanilla beans. Add one or two (split lengthwise) to the bottle. A pretty ribbon or scrap fabric with a tag will finish it off nicely. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSP4TN_zz2dQatb3fdx6R9JXaDtdujDbpTMNbqnrxytTpJS54qiKjbRyKavSvGwkSb2NBM01WxzWIyL0bJLCXTebAyO7EOR48E7Zx0YpNS_aKt9xe43z7mZi4ZsUjTydP4oYo7qybPr_oH/s1600/IMG_2815_Fotor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="315" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSP4TN_zz2dQatb3fdx6R9JXaDtdujDbpTMNbqnrxytTpJS54qiKjbRyKavSvGwkSb2NBM01WxzWIyL0bJLCXTebAyO7EOR48E7Zx0YpNS_aKt9xe43z7mZi4ZsUjTydP4oYo7qybPr_oH/s400/IMG_2815_Fotor.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<u><b><br /></b></u>
<u><b>For Sugar</b></u>: Wash your hands and put your hair back. If you have disposable gloves, wear them...you're giving a gift, not germs. Dump the correct amount of sugar into your food processor (assuming you have one). Get the cutting board and cut the vanilla bean lengthwise, just as you did for the extract. Now, with the flat part of your blade/knife and starting at one end, carefully scrape the inside contents of the vanilla bean and put into the food processor. Make sure to clean out each bean. Discard bean husk or add to the vanilla extract!</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After you are done with all beans (15-20 beans), close up the processor and pulse the sugar until all of the vanilla has been distributed evenly and is well incorporated into the sugar. All you have to do now is pour into the jars and finish with a ribbon and tag. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Of course, no teach gift is complete without a heartfelt card from their student. Teachers hold a very special place in my heart. They work so very hard every day to make sure your child succeeds. Here are some other fantastic teacher gift ideas:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Annuals or small perennials, decorated with a bow. Make sure the plant has growing instructions included.</li>
<li>Handmade bowl covers and hot pads</li>
<li>Gift Certificate to a book store or a craft store</li>
<li>Handmade bird feeder. This would be a great daddy project with help from the student.</li>
<li>A pretty decorative pillow with ruffles is great for a young teacher. Keep it neutral!</li>
<li>Zippered, padded iPad cover. I need to get that tutorial up here!</li>
</ul>
<div>
Some of these ideas require sewing skills, but try to keep in mind that any thoughtful gift is more than the teacher is expecting. Even if it is just a card from the student, that is enough. Your time, attention and understanding are the best gifts of all.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Happy end of the school year to all!</div>

I was intrigued to say the least!! The package claimed several things, one of which was very, very dear to my heart: no chemicals. They are meant to replace dryer sheets and softeners.<br />
<br />
I have a daughter (and myself) who has reactions to many things in her environment. She was diagnosed young with eczema, but I came to realize that wasn't the case. Her symptoms would come and go, sometimes very severe. I soon realized that she had skin allergies. Anyway....the dryer balls aren't coated with any chemicals, softeners, fragrances, etc. They're just hard plastic balls. <br />

So, I'm standing in Marshall's, wondering how these plastic balls are going to help me save money, energy and best of all, give me a life with a few less chemicals in it. The package says that the balls bounce around and separate your laundry while in the dryer, making it more efficient. <br />
<br />
I've used them for about 4 months now and I'm very pleased. My daughter itches much less now and that makes me a happy mama. At first I noticed a bit of static on some items, but that seems to have resolved itself. I honestly couldn't be happier that I tried this product!<br />
<br />
There are lots of different versions of the balls, many of which are wool. You can even add essential oils to them if that's something you want to do. Here is a great tutorial on the <a href="http://livesimply.me/2014/09/04/homemade-wool-dryer-balls/" target="_blank">Live Simply blog</a> that shows you step by step instructions on how to create these wonderful, colorful balls. <br />
<br />
I know there are moms out there that are struggling with eczema or allergies in their families. I'm here to tell you this is one step closer to your goal. <br />
<br />
Happy Spring!<br />

A changing pad cover is a simple item to make, requiring beginner sewing skills. This tutorial assumes you know to back stitch at the beginning to secure stitches, etc. Here is my tutorial on how to create a changing pad cover. I recommend you read the whole tutorial first. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Not feeling so creative? I also make and sell <a href="http://www.rockytopdesign.etsy.com/" target="_blank">custom crib bedding</a>. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<u><b>Items you'll need:</b></u></div>
<div>
<u><b><br /></b></u></div>
<div>
- 3/4 yard quilting cotton (44" wide)</div>
<div>
- 1 yard or less of 5/8 wide braided elastic, white</div>
<div>
- Thread</div>
<div>
- Basic sewing skills, serger is a bonus!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We will start with our fabric. When starting any project, it is wise to wash and dry your fabric so there aren't any surprises. I never use heat when washing/drying my fabrics so as to minimize shrinkage. Press fabric with selvages together, how it came off of the bolt. Fold the fabric with selvages together and then bring the folded side up to the selvages, lining everything up on your cutting mat to make sure we have square edges. Trim excess. This is called squaring up your fabric. Do this with all sewing projects!</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifkqmM93BDJVXURr-taVRG8uhNHGIbWu8H2U4OICKtQv937Dhm8ifyMgFLWlCF_4nMpngFbkFk9SlJVh18dCasEbK-1UkdyAjEyBFJUyRFV-ZJnZbMGDXLXsTYaddRyCgQykuWzctFuRgw/s640/blogger-image-1038510683.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQWU76jkm0hbx6fM7z_lmNX79g9zi4unOnMsqqDFPXhn_QBeT0S1YnyKJo4YNj_YwZmd6kD8u1ctGBWLMtL1PdRylbBKIFaN_o1vMZmaLLEPhY7QceG7Ropvkg6I9bAUrl4oz8_fe_6uuj/s1600/blogger-image-906277437.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQWU76jkm0hbx6fM7z_lmNX79g9zi4unOnMsqqDFPXhn_QBeT0S1YnyKJo4YNj_YwZmd6kD8u1ctGBWLMtL1PdRylbBKIFaN_o1vMZmaLLEPhY7QceG7Ropvkg6I9bAUrl4oz8_fe_6uuj/s640/blogger-image-906277437.jpg" /></a></div>
Once you have your fabric squared up, cut your fabric to 44"x29". The fabric should already be 44" wide, so you just need to cut to 29" to get the piece you need to make the pad cover. From there, take all 4 corners and put them all together, lining them up perfectly.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
Once all 4 corners are lined up, cut a 5"x5" square . Unfolded, it looks like this:<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSn4hjE8OpmraqeyZ-4kgI9RqUw_37fqmCg7E_fyOcm3kvabVEyQJjOgo6iAQ9YwGB8MJaOUIH8ZKyNM_D08Q3CY5qXYNGg4jytitm9On5g2pJf3n0B-gtdEZSP0ZYqedOi-UW1fbgbCWb/s640/blogger-image--585167572.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSn4hjE8OpmraqeyZ-4kgI9RqUw_37fqmCg7E_fyOcm3kvabVEyQJjOgo6iAQ9YwGB8MJaOUIH8ZKyNM_D08Q3CY5qXYNGg4jytitm9On5g2pJf3n0B-gtdEZSP0ZYqedOi-UW1fbgbCWb/s640/blogger-image--585167572.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Now we will make the pockets of the pad cover. Take only one corner cut-out and fold the two "points" together, right sides together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu1gMm4dmCIFg7huWkgaCU4XcshwbdzZOyZLnXGoslNWSVFG4jH8QS4Cbs15CXgEdAVaVgJEo4UibUMhXHDUZXBlLc4pXdgOYghyphenhyphenEtCv97CFRQUbpRkpdE7yBjOilV0KGmPmUXLBkgMznw/s640/blogger-image-730656174.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu1gMm4dmCIFg7huWkgaCU4XcshwbdzZOyZLnXGoslNWSVFG4jH8QS4Cbs15CXgEdAVaVgJEo4UibUMhXHDUZXBlLc4pXdgOYghyphenhyphenEtCv97CFRQUbpRkpdE7yBjOilV0KGmPmUXLBkgMznw/s640/blogger-image-730656174.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
When you do this, you'll have the two cut edges line up. Pin this together. This will form your pocket. I always serge this edge and then straight stitch for durability. If you don't have a serger, that's okay!! Just straight stitch that edge with about a .25" seam allowance. You can then either zig zag the edge or some machines come with a "serge stitch". Repeat for all 3 remaining corners. Trim the excess threads as you go. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Next step is to finish the edges of the fabric. I serge around the whole perimeter of the fabric, which is now in oval shape. Again, if you don't have a serger, simply zig zag the edge or use your machine's serge stitch to finish. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Now it's time to add the elastic. I use a zig zag stitch, which allows the elastic to stretch. You'll also need to lower the stitch width, which is usually signified with a zig zag picture on your machine. On my machine, I lower mine to 3.5. I also stitch the elastic to the fabric, I don't create a channel where you feed the elastic around. It's my preference. Make sure your thread color somewhat matches your fabric color. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikN4_3LSwnhZX_xqYPH7-Yy9rP2l7r6Hjj4b1WWvYGhuJWo3q75DMFcGQdXwdAf_1LsJMoUOfcO4wIyRHJVeRovRq-g4Ij-BmbnAwKa-UuRlcZCSAIXk1zt05PUA7MqhLaX6vJnVWqNnCF/s640/blogger-image-945691910.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikN4_3LSwnhZX_xqYPH7-Yy9rP2l7r6Hjj4b1WWvYGhuJWo3q75DMFcGQdXwdAf_1LsJMoUOfcO4wIyRHJVeRovRq-g4Ij-BmbnAwKa-UuRlcZCSAIXk1zt05PUA7MqhLaX6vJnVWqNnCF/s640/blogger-image-945691910.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
With wrong side of the fabric laying up on your machine, fold over the edge only once, and only enough to get your stitching on the top side. Place the end of your elastic so it covers the stitching on the fabric. See pictures below. The idea is to enclose the stitched edge of the fabric under your elastic so you don't see it. With your elastic in place, stitch and backstitch over the first half inch or so, to secure. If you have a "needle down" feature on your machine, set that for needle down. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
You are going to gently stretch the elastic as you zig zag on top of it. You might have to give some gentle pulling contrast on the fabric that has been sewn in back of your machine, but you don't want to pull the fabric through, you're just giving some reinforcement to it. Fold the edge of the fabric over and stretch that elastic and stitch. Make sure the width of your zig zag is not wider than your elastic as you want to stitch ON the elastic to secure it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhihuKpHkb2m4nMyXS8fW2x7ZLjM2VcVMEwrKfc4ptjhqOUhH9O6Bzw5-WDq3vYDPMDFAS_vBeNAWBmSEggXctiNnb_EFh_3D2lvaEtkRHPRAytL-diay-mf92w97YCcxBQa6jKYzsAH59M/s640/blogger-image--763489929.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhihuKpHkb2m4nMyXS8fW2x7ZLjM2VcVMEwrKfc4ptjhqOUhH9O6Bzw5-WDq3vYDPMDFAS_vBeNAWBmSEggXctiNnb_EFh_3D2lvaEtkRHPRAytL-diay-mf92w97YCcxBQa6jKYzsAH59M/s640/blogger-image--763489929.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Stretch and zig zag the elastic on all the way around the perimeter of the pad. When you get around to the beginning of your elastic, just back stitch a few times and cut the elastic off. Now is the time to look for threads that need trimming, etc. That's it!! Now you have a gorgeous, custom made changing pad cover! Not feeling so creative? <span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">1. If you want to paint or decoupage your wood plank, now</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">would be the time. Please allow enough time to dry well. Before painting, look on the back to make sure there's a way to hang the finished project. If not, you'll have to make that happen. Now...paint.</span></div>
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">2. Cut out a template. I chose a heart as this was going on my living room wall as a part of my new gallery wall. Using a scrap piece of paper, trace and cut out object. It has to be an object that without definition, will still look like that object. A letter is perfect, or a shape. Something like an airplane might not work so well as it needs more definition to not look like a blob. I</span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">3. Center the template on your wood and secure with tape (under template). It's okay if you don't want to measure. I didn't.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">4. Hammer nails into wood surrounding template. They don't need to be in super far, just stable. </span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">5. Take your string and tie one end on a nail, leaving about 5" of tail for tying off later. </span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">6. This is where the fun begins! You can take your template off now. Start by making an outline 2 times around the perimeter of the object. Each time you come to a nail, wrap the string around it and go to the next. It is VERY important that the outline is done a special way. When moving from one nail to the next, always wrap the nail in a clockwise motion. This forms a very neat line. Keep your string taught as you wrap the entire time.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">7. Now you can move onto randomly wrapping the nails. Sometimes I wrap twice on each nail. Move around and fill up your space! Occasionally, you'll have to push some of the string down the nails so you have room to keep wrapping.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">8. How do you know when to stop? You stop when you like how it looks. It's all up to you. Finish up by tying it off at the starting point. Done!!! Sit back and admire your craftiness!!</span><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">There are lots of ways you can make this your own with colors and design. Have fun!!

<span style="font-size: large;">You can't get too far into a boutique these days without the soothing images of corals, peaches, mint and aqua. I have personally fallen head over heels for the combo. Adding metallic gold to the mix is like adding a cherry to an already gorgeous sundae.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">This is the Winged Collection from <a href="http://www.artgalleryfabrics.com/" target="_blank">Art Gallery Fabrics</a>. Fabric designer <a href="http://www.goinghometoroost.com/" target="_blank">Bonnie Christine</a> includes this collection in her stunningly vast array of fabric creations. I'm not quite sure how a pastel can be bright and soothing at the same time, but she's done it here. </span><br />

I haven't painted many pieces of furniture, but I'm always so pleased with the results. We bought a new TV and therefore, needed a new TV stand. I couldn't bring myself to buy something new, so I went in search of something that would work from Craigslist. Found it. Gorgeous and in perfect condition, this coffee table was to be the new TV stand.<br />

I started with spray primer. After doing some research, I decided to use the Kilz brand spray primer. I did a bit of light sanding first, then I wiped clean with water. After drying, I used the spray primer on it, until it was almost white. <br />

<br />
After drying overnight, the next morning I bought an antique white spray paint. I almost used a roller and paint, but I just didn't have it in me to get all of that out. Rustoleum was the winning brand here. Nice, light, even sweeps when spraying. I put some fans on it and let it dry for another 5 hours before I went over it with a 2nd coat of the antique white color. Paint takes longer to dry when it's cold. After the second coat, I allowed it to dry overnight.<br />
<br />
The top of the TV stand is where I was torn. I thought about painting the whole thing antique white and then distressing. I also thought about using a bright turquoise for the top. I had that spray paint already but I couldn't figure out how to cover the rest of the table well enough to use spray paint on the top only. I seriously didn't have time to waste on that. I finally reached into my extensive collection of paint in a can and found the perfect shade of light, celery green. <br />
<br />
I used a brush and it worked great. I had my mind set on distressing after drying, but I just loved the look of the table without it. I'm not into the whole 'shabby chic' look anyway, so I went for the 'brand new' look. Hot damn. This table turned out gorgeous.<br />

<br />
I always like to finish up with a thin coat of Polycrylic. You can get that in the wood stain section in the hardware store. It adds a bit of sheen, but mostly just protects it from fingerprints and scuffs, etc.<br />
<br />
I finished it off with a new gallery wall. I scored gray/silver baskets at TJ Maxx. Love it.<br />

<br />
<br />
My advice, don't be afraid of trying this. Always make sure to let the paint dry well in between coats and keep away from flying dust, etc. You've got this!!<br />

I just had to quickly share these wonderful coral, aqua and metallic gold pillows I found the other day. Target. That's right, I found them at Target.<br />
<br />
Loving these geometric shapes and soft metal prints. Anyway, thought I would share. Soon to be on sale, I'm sure:)
<br />
<br />
Have a great day!<br />

I grew up in the midwest and to me, that is beauty. The gently blowing breeze over-top the grain filled fields holds a gentle picture in my mind that I suspect, always will. <br />
<br />
I have come to discover that the place you call home...truly home...will always be the most beautiful. Maybe the dirty, city streets for the city born aren't the fondest to remember, but I would bet that the towering architecture and buzzing streets hold a corner of your heart. My husband was born here in Colorado, so the Rocky Mountains are something he continues to love and cherish every single day. While I am in complete amazement of these hills of strong granite, somehow the prairies, wandering creeks and fireflies of the midwest make me feel at peace and at home.<br />

<br />
I came upon <a href="http://sarahjanestudios.com/blog/" target="_blank">Sarah Jane's</a> new fabric line today and not only is it gorgeous, but it reminds me of home. <a href="http://www.michaelmillerfabrics.com/new/wee-wander.html" target="_blank">Wee Wander</a> from <a href="http://www.michaelmillerfabrics.com/" target="_blank">Michael Miller</a> is a great representation of what life is like through the eyes of a child in the Midwest. Fireflies, climbing trees, leaves and pinecones, frolicking birds and ponies are some of the memories featured in these fabrics. In Illinois,we didn't have too many ponies, just cows. I don't suppose cows playing in the fields and flowers would have made such a pretty print;)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
While these fabrics won't be showing up <a href="http://www.rockytopdesign.etsy.com/" target="_blank">my shop</a> until January, I couldn't wait another minute to introduce them to you.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, take a moment to remember your childhood days. For me, my fondest memories are playing in the creek with my brother, Eric or playing catch in the front yard. Catching fireflies in the dark, warm nights is an amazing experience that every child should have. If you can't have that, you can at least get an idea of what that might be like.<br />

However, I came across a fabric designer today and I just LOVE everything she has! I'm not sure if it's the color I love more or her design. Her fabric designs are currently being printed by <a href="http://camelotfabrics.com/" target="_blank">Camelot Fabrics</a>. It's no secret to my friends that I'm a chevron addict. I don't think there's a room in my home that doesn't have chevron in some form. <br />
<br />
Jackie feeds right into this addiction and temps me with additional wonders like large dots, anchors and stripes. I know from experience that these designs will be wildly popular with my moms-to-be when ordering their custom crib bedding. Here are some of my favorites that I uploaded today:<br />

I love how the colors react with one another and seem to be the perfect combination of contrast but with a similar feel as if they just belong together. The stripes, the dots...they are just fabulous. Jacqueline has a great website that features her retail bedding designs and home office supplies. You can read about her successes on her <a href="http://www.jackiemcfee.com/index.php" target="_blank">website</a>. Great job, Jackie!<br />

<br />
What gorgeous colors they have chosen...49 to be exact. <a href="http://www.pantone.com/pages/products/product.aspx?pid=1258&ca=34" target="_blank">Pantone</a> says that the "MyColor inspired by Pantone offers
designers and do-it-yourselfers an affordable, easy-to-use solution for adding a splash
of color to any paint project including furniture and accent walls.
Offered in a 35 oz. size, this ready-to-go, ultra low VOC paint is odor free and
provides an elegant, eggshell finish that is both durable and washable. Premixed,
factory-precision color ensures an exact match every time while unique stain-blocking
and self-priming qualities save time and reduce workload."<br />

<br />
What a great idea. Just open and paint. Sometimes I find it so difficult to choose the color of paint that I just give up and go home empty handed. So, if you have a dresser or table that could use a pop of color, why not take a look at these and pick one out for yourself. Don't have a Lowe's local? No worries, you can order them <a href="http://www.pantone.com/pages/pantone/myColor.aspx" target="_blank">online</a>.<br />

These fabrics are not only printed on a high quality quilting cotton, but the colors, the illustrations...they are just so beautiful. I pondered for so long what I wanted to make with these fabrics and knew that I wanted it to be something that I could look at every day and really enjoy the fabrics the way they are meant to be enjoyed.<br />
<br />
I have mentioned <a href="http://designwithaltitude.blogspot.com/2013/03/chevron-table-runner.html" target="_blank">before</a> that I previously wasn't the biggest fan of table runners, but they have really grown on me. I decided to do a strip-style so I could use bigger pieces of the fabric...making sure that the whole pattern was visable. <br />

I was scared that it would be really bright...which is not what I was wanting. In true Riley Blake fashion, it is the perfect shade of lime, which isn't too bright but not too dark, either.<br />
<br />
This trim will go perfectly on my drapes I have planned for my office. Hopefully I'll get those up this Spring.<br />
<br />
Happy Sewing!<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">There only used to be one kind of <a href="http://www.plaidonline.com/mod-podge/brand/home.htm" target="_blank">Mod Podge</a>....the original. You know, with the yellow label? I saw a pin on Pinterest some time ago that showed all of the kinds of Mod Podge there are available now so I was personally very excited to purchase 2 new kinds of Mod Podge that I didn't already have. What shall I do with the fabric one? Perhaps decoupage some fabric onto some picture frames? The outdoor one will be perfect for those summer days when I'm feeling crafty.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">The website from Plaid (the company who makes Mod Podge) is actually really cool. <br />Jaynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13514675858610616996noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-106963463142826550.post-26868832421850697322013-03-10T12:34:00.003-06:002013-03-10T13:54:45.851-06:00Chevron Table Runner I have to admit that I used to hate table runners. They always were so old-looking, with tassels on the ends and country type fabric. I was not a fan. However, last fall I <a href="http://designwithaltitude.blogspot.com/2013/03/out-to-sea.html" target="_blank">created</a> a great table runner from Sarah Jane's Out to Sea fabric and fell in love with the possibility that table runners could actually add to my obsession with home decor.<br />
<br />
Chevron is one of my latest obsessions and has been for quite some time now and no wonder...it's everywhere! My <a href="http://www.rockytopdesign.etsy.com/" target="_blank">customers</a> request it all the time and as a result, I'm addicted. So, I thought I would whip up a chevron table runner for my buffet for spring. I chose one of Art Gallery's Alhambra II fabric that I had lying around and paired it with Amy Butler's solid in Mist. The two are simply stunning together. I have listed a quick tutorial below for those of you who would like to make one too!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrXCOiVoc0PzbxSo30VCh9FeR5H9uYsBRnKw2P3NI390BDvlPeBKxX8H0cTXfqX4DAh_Gzv-ANz5NsBdTQRuNWG92VLevpbF8_N6AD0J_FvEARjfJDotlt8xc-DoyWHuBu6UGg8MOVFFOx/s1600/IMG_7926.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrXCOiVoc0PzbxSo30VCh9FeR5H9uYsBRnKw2P3NI390BDvlPeBKxX8H0cTXfqX4DAh_Gzv-ANz5NsBdTQRuNWG92VLevpbF8_N6AD0J_FvEARjfJDotlt8xc-DoyWHuBu6UGg8MOVFFOx/s640/IMG_7926.JPG" width="427" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I started with some test fabric to see how big I wanted to make my quilt squares, so some of these first pictures are with Riley Blake's medium zig zag in navy (in case you're confused:)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I decided I would start with 6"x 6" squares. I cut 21 of each the patterned fabric and 21 of the solid color fabric. It's essential that the two fabrics you choose are contrasting if you want the chevron to really pop. With right sides together, place a solid and a patterned piece together and sew around the perimeter, with a 1/2" seam allowance. <br />
<br />
Once you have sewn all of your squares to each other, Cut on the diagonal both ways so you have 4 triangles. Open and press seams to one side. You should have a square that consists of both fabrics.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdR4XATBic6JO8DiGnVXWWpa0wNMyLKS-bifm2GvdZ9D_Pm7usidjKKkO38ClLx6-N6VPa-2E3NJsR3Qd0DL94G5yxANILeNcB6RTMIyC6Y3k2tYL-bWErDVA1wF1HCVGMwSSPSYTNcAnY/s1600/blog1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdR4XATBic6JO8DiGnVXWWpa0wNMyLKS-bifm2GvdZ9D_Pm7usidjKKkO38ClLx6-N6VPa-2E3NJsR3Qd0DL94G5yxANILeNcB6RTMIyC6Y3k2tYL-bWErDVA1wF1HCVGMwSSPSYTNcAnY/s400/blog1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Sew pieces together matching solid to solid and pattern to pattern. I continued this until I made one chain the length of my entire table runner. Press well, seams to one side. Then make another length, press.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7nEXfzEigrFuq41TyYimKnhjx8r1fcuXpOm1zfE62Ekx4eFmwR3TfCmMcYJ0zX8lPLcH7Jv6DOFINNKf99_-K8HqEWbovNMNbyqEqS7wDEKRT9Iitfm3sFJ5q4E5SRdtDaV3eahA4lxy_/s1600/IMG_7861.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7nEXfzEigrFuq41TyYimKnhjx8r1fcuXpOm1zfE62Ekx4eFmwR3TfCmMcYJ0zX8lPLcH7Jv6DOFINNKf99_-K8HqEWbovNMNbyqEqS7wDEKRT9Iitfm3sFJ5q4E5SRdtDaV3eahA4lxy_/s400/IMG_7861.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
After you have your rows sewn and pressed well, its time to sew them together. Pin and sew, then press. Voila!!! The top is done, so gorgeous!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUTYgmpqDn24VLck8sdb16wjxazlkCqmlwytSdaj30NSexJFNegz46ruM2gz8YYLOHreUciiz9gtuBmv26xBDYcRaUzJZxOclv5KD_wSrE_nSVrLBLO1CmvwWEEeXXB6ksYF5sl6Dq99SR/s1600/IMG_7884.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUTYgmpqDn24VLck8sdb16wjxazlkCqmlwytSdaj30NSexJFNegz46ruM2gz8YYLOHreUciiz9gtuBmv26xBDYcRaUzJZxOclv5KD_wSrE_nSVrLBLO1CmvwWEEeXXB6ksYF5sl6Dq99SR/s400/IMG_7884.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I use Warm and Bright batting as it is just the best in my opinion. It's a little more money than the other brands but it's clear when using it that your money did not go to waste. I chose a white matelasse for the backing and I also used it for the binding. I also stitched in the ditch on the chevron to quilt it a bit.<br />
<br />
Don't you love my little clips? They are the best. Perfect for working with minky as well. There are many places you can buy them, but I got mine at <a href="http://www.xogigifabrics.com/details.php?prodId=1284&category=&secondary=&keywords=clips" target="_blank">XO Gigi Fabrics</a>:)<br />
<br />

<br />
This pattern would be great for a quilt, but I would definitely make the squares much larger to begin with so you aren't sewing a million little squares together. Get some crafting done today!!<br />

It's called retail therapy and I'm addicted. Many times I stroll through the store looking, touching, wishing....but really have no desire to purchase unless it's something really, really special. I've come across two of those items lately. Two items that I simply could not go home without.<br />
<br />
I often frequent stores like Marshall's, TJ Max and the like. You know, designer items at bargain prices? A new store opened up recently in Fort Collins called HomeGoods. I'm sure you've heard of this one, too. I know it mostly from that really happy guy on HGTV, David. He does the cool paintings and redoes the whole room for a family. Color something........<br />
<br />
Anyhoo....I just love perusing these stores for my latest must-have. Here they are:<br />
<br />
Very current...chevron is outrageously popular right now and HomeGoods had burnt orange, lime green, grass green, brown, red.....I had to have the green. Even better, when I got home I discovered that it matched my rug to perfection. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWLVKQ5YoMJWgGFQSXx40Q-z0PCOxml2dqFkIwWuWhHDinErRDxU3b_zB7FX_2jyVN0RI7GZ4LdwGKa_Pfc01qy4y3PPYpnPaVC9muSbsh1P-RspHZk3lCyQpodWXsmhp-4ZE4dk19wFNB/s1600/throw.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWLVKQ5YoMJWgGFQSXx40Q-z0PCOxml2dqFkIwWuWhHDinErRDxU3b_zB7FX_2jyVN0RI7GZ4LdwGKa_Pfc01qy4y3PPYpnPaVC9muSbsh1P-RspHZk3lCyQpodWXsmhp-4ZE4dk19wFNB/s400/throw.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Number two was just purchased this last weekend at Marshalls. Too adorable and only $4.99. Really!!?? For under $5 I could have this adorable owl? Did you notice that it matches my new chevron throw and the rug? <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPuBRN2ivaD6leh5TDMTMsUZ2WmhJeClLf1Jc-WhyrZdLhOYtKXbHLA_7lhQu6v6VecD5TeBn9mN32iVVk_xVW_J_XYNn3UMx7DjlyHjlI8HIkO3Lb1jB9cvo3uXNlC2tyI4U-uHVn1-5U/s1600/IMG_4187.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPuBRN2ivaD6leh5TDMTMsUZ2WmhJeClLf1Jc-WhyrZdLhOYtKXbHLA_7lhQu6v6VecD5TeBn9mN32iVVk_xVW_J_XYNn3UMx7DjlyHjlI8HIkO3Lb1jB9cvo3uXNlC2tyI4U-uHVn1-5U/s400/IMG_4187.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I have learned that when you're decorating a home or a room to take your time. You can't just go out to the store one day and buy everything you need. These creative, decorative goodies must be acquired one at a time. If you follow this strategy you'll end up with a room that is dressed with treasures, not just things that match.<br />
<br />
Happy Decor!<br />

<br />
What a lovely afternoon strolling with my mom through store after store when we ended up at Marshall's. My day became even lovelier when I saw some gorgeous shelf paper that was a stunning shade of aqua blue and had a very uncanny resemblance to some <a href="http://freespiritfabric.com/core-pages/gallery.php?gal_id=335&sw_id=4835" target="_blank">Dena Design's fabric</a> that I use in my <a href="http://www.rockytopdesign.etsy.com/" target="_blank">Etsy shop</a>. Naturally, this made me very happy. In case you don't know; I have a fabric addiction.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKlDvrY2jLuTnT1r5I_rnyVA6T0RbEfbgy_TdfkZfj47eygyVL-_E41RgPn62-42Jdc92sbmV2LXknF44lUYWIQObfQzhG42cgfeBkM71F0R2rsizyDMNtZ8g2x_8utxYV8UkVZXWm4DBf/s1600/IMG_1323.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKlDvrY2jLuTnT1r5I_rnyVA6T0RbEfbgy_TdfkZfj47eygyVL-_E41RgPn62-42Jdc92sbmV2LXknF44lUYWIQObfQzhG42cgfeBkM71F0R2rsizyDMNtZ8g2x_8utxYV8UkVZXWm4DBf/s320/IMG_1323.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Of course, I had to buy it. I hadn't used shelf paper in quite a few years and the last time I remember it was this hideous yellow and white gingham, which at the time was the prettiest at the store. Maybe I'm just lagging behind in the shelf paper deptartment, but I don't remember seeing so many beautiful designs. There was zebra print, lime and white damask, and amongst others was this gorgeous aqua. I could hardly wait to get it home and in my drawers:)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzugXk9aZ_15DTzt1cuz3upzQthmPQGGTSiHv3IdrsMRIao1jyl3TD2ZkY3ZEcAcVevaRZ5vWR-Gp9zQYCTLx6wFIAlP7cpTTxyHqP6tgMAbxP3h8fxyJa3fwGAQcZoTf-aD0aWmrMBCng/s1600/IMG_1325.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzugXk9aZ_15DTzt1cuz3upzQthmPQGGTSiHv3IdrsMRIao1jyl3TD2ZkY3ZEcAcVevaRZ5vWR-Gp9zQYCTLx6wFIAlP7cpTTxyHqP6tgMAbxP3h8fxyJa3fwGAQcZoTf-aD0aWmrMBCng/s320/IMG_1325.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My husband thinks I'm a big nerd when it comes to stuff like this, especially when I make him get up off the couch when reading his Sunday newspaper just to come look in my drawers. He thought I was an even bigger nerd when I got out my camera to take photos.<br />
<br />
Happy Superbowl Sunday!<br />

<br />
This last fall I was looking for some design inspiration and found it with (surprise) fabric! I scored a great price on some Waverly fabric at my local JoAnn store. The fabric itself was 50% off and I had a coupon for another 20% off your purchase, so it was a steal! I had been looking to do a headboard for quite some time and of course, wanted to do it myself, so here I went.<br />
<br />
All you need is:<br />
<br />
<b>Fabric</b> - Preferable home decor fabric and enough to wrap around the back side of the wood by 3" on each side<br />
<b>Staple Gun with staples</b><br />
<b>Scissors</b><br />
<b>One sheet of Plywood/OSB</b> - Measure your bed and know what you need before heading to the store.<br />
<b>Batting</b><br />
<b>Spray Adhesive</b> <br />
<br />
I believe that Home Depot or Lowes will make straight cuts for you at the store for free, but please don't take my word for it. If you don't own a saw and the hardware store won't do it for you, make sure to ask that hottie neighbor of yours to cut it for you or head on down to the local firehouse, where there is sure to be a hot firefighter that would LOVE to get his saw for you and cut your wood.<br />
<br />
I did a rectangle as that's what I was wanting for my space, but if you have skilled saw cutting abilities, you could do round or some other funky shape. Just remember that you can't re-do a cut, so measure twice and mark your board well before cutting.<br />
<br />
I do want to mention that if you are hanging this on your wall or standing this on stilts, etc...make sure to attach everything to the back of the board <i>before</i> you cover it in fabric.<br />
<br />
I dusted off my board and cleared a big space in my living room. Here are the steps one by one:<br />
<br />
1. Unroll the batting and lay it on your board ; smooth out the wrinkles. Cut off excess, leaving about 3" extra on each side.<br />
<br />
2. Take the batting off and spray the adhesive onto the board. Apply batting. If your board is large, you might want to do this in half or quarter sections.<br />
<br />
3. Let the adhesive set for a minute or two and then flip your board to batting side down.<br />
<br />
4. Staple the batting every 9 inches or so to secure. Pull taught, but not too much.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcbUV3UCM13qWaY5bnAjfrRPscCzPMKnbgnteoOPCN3UFMXXtJgcp3CtNIV7a5f6VGyS7wGDYfN48_Srr8J9aBDCJsI64nJFfR-Y2IfdUnJvSHLfx_-EJ5Xgb9OF-8HsyhpPMR14SJp3E/s1600/IMG_7354.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcbUV3UCM13qWaY5bnAjfrRPscCzPMKnbgnteoOPCN3UFMXXtJgcp3CtNIV7a5f6VGyS7wGDYfN48_Srr8J9aBDCJsI64nJFfR-Y2IfdUnJvSHLfx_-EJ5Xgb9OF-8HsyhpPMR14SJp3E/s320/IMG_7354.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
5. Stand the board up and lean against a wall or table out of the way. You may need help with this. If you haven't ironed your fabric yet, do so. Please do not skip this step. Lay the fabric right side down in the area that your board was just laying. Take a look at the pattern and mentally note where you want the board to go. Smooth out your fabric flat and get help laying the board, batting down on top of the fabric. Do this slowly as you don't want to shift your fabric. Feel free to give the fabric a <i>little</i> tug every 12" or so to make sure it's wrinkle free. <br />
<br />
6. Be picky. Be very picky about exactly how the board is laying on the fabric, where the pattern placement is, etc. You don't get to re-do this part.<br />
<br />
7. Take your staple gun and securely staple each side in the middle. Top center, bottom center, right center, left center. Make sure you are pulling taught with each time you staple. However, you don't want to pull so tight you mess up your pattern. When stapling, fold under the raw edge of the fabric so it isn't showing.<br />
<br />
8. Move to the end of each side and fasten in the same way you did
before. Top, bottom, left, right. The goal is to secure the identical
spot on each adjacent side. It's like tightening a drum head. You just
can't start in one spot and move around from there, you have to do it
in a fashion that is evenly distributed. I have noted a little bit of what I'm talking about with numbers here:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi14Q11IORZcA5IuIXzFruZ3aoYlbYeSnQk5UqaDSRB6PD6YESQcNRWOuQXlEGTL-YNurOTXOAWd99-z0Ljm6IJ95yGFJ0zQfOfjAUZS2I2psrv13Ize7ZfI7ipkiRVkoRE30bsgCx83QE/s1600/IMG_7358.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi14Q11IORZcA5IuIXzFruZ3aoYlbYeSnQk5UqaDSRB6PD6YESQcNRWOuQXlEGTL-YNurOTXOAWd99-z0Ljm6IJ95yGFJ0zQfOfjAUZS2I2psrv13Ize7ZfI7ipkiRVkoRE30bsgCx83QE/s320/IMG_7358.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
9. For the
corners, fold those like tucking in the sheet corners on your bed. Nice
and neat folds, tucking under those raw edges. You don't want a big
wad of fabric at the corners, either, so trim away fabric as needed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
10. Eventually you have stapled all around the headboard and should have a staple about every 3 inches or so. Now you can pick up one side and see the wonderfulness!!!<br />

<br />
<br />
I hope you had fun! Play around with patterns and colors. Be bold! You can even drill little holes in the wood before this process and then add buttons after it is all done for a tufted look. Feel free to add decorative brads or whatever else your creativity seeks.<br />
